Anti-Fungal Treatment
Effective Laser Therapy for Healthy and Clear Nails
Nail fungus (Onychomycosis) is a fungal infection affecting the nail and nail bed. This type of fungal infection is different from athlete’s foot or skin fungus in which the fungus infects the skin on the feet, especially between the toes. About half of the nail disorders and nail abnormalities occur as a result of a fungal infection. Nail infections are usually very persistent and the treatment is complicated.
Do I have nail fungus?
Signs that you may have an infected toenail include:
- No shine to a nail or nails
- The shape of a nail has become distorted
- A nail is crumbly at the edge
- Unusual thickness to a nail
- Darkened color
- Unpleasant odour
Toenail Fungus signs include a thickened nail plate or nail bed, yellow discoloration of the nails, foot pain and bad foot odour caused by the fungal debris under the nail. The nails often become thick and fragile and can detach from the nail bed or the skin under the nail.
Nail fungus usually starts at the distal end of the fingernail or toenail. The infection then spreads to the proximal end of the nail towards the nail bed. Finally, the fungal infection spreads to other toenails, but rarely infects all of them.
Embarrassing nail fungus can be effectively treated with laser without the dangerous side effects of oral medication.
How soon will I be able to see improvement after treatment?
The reality is, you may not see results right away and laser treatments will not change your existing nails. As the new nail grows in, it shows signs of clearing from the bottom of the nail as it grows. This usually takes 6-12 months depending on how fast your individual nails grow.
Laser treatment versus drug treatment?
Oral anti-fungal medications are toxic, and may cause serious medical complications. As a result, clients that are taking these medications are asked to go through routine blood tests to make sure their liver is not damaged during the treatment. A laser treatment is completely drug free and there are no known adverse reactions or side effects from use of lasers to treat a toenail fungus infection. However, you may see even better results if you add a topical antifungal cream to your laser treatment.
How many sessions will be needed?
Depending on the severity of your fungal infection, you may require up to three laser treatments for nail fungus removal. The second treatment is performed one to two months after the first, and the next treatment is performed one to two months later. Our technicians will assess the severity of your fungal infection during your consultation and provide you with the best treatment options based on your individual needs.
Does the treatment require special preparation?
Your nails must be free of any nail polish or coatings. Trim nails and clean as well as possible.
Is the treatment painful?
No. The treatment will not cause any pain at the nail area but you may experience slight pain at the surrounding skin area. You will feel the area under the nail heat up but not to an uncomfortable degree.
What are the possible side effects of laser nail fungus therapy?
A mild warming sensation after treatment is common. Possible side effects may include redness of the treated skin around the nail lasting 24 – 72 hours, slight swelling of the treated skin around the nail lasting 24 – 72 hours, discoloration or burn marks may occur on the nail. In very rare cases, blistering of the treated skin around the nail and scarring of the treated skin around the nail may occur.
What to expect after your Nail Fungus Laser Treatment?
To help prevent re-infection:
- Wear clean shoes/socks home after treatment
- Wash sheets, disinfect shower/bath and vacuum carpets on the day of treatment.
- Apply anti-fungal cream 2X per day for approximately 2 weeks to 3+ months depending severity of the infection.
- Apply anti-fungal powder to all shoes at least 1x per week for at least 1+ month
- Keep nails trimmed and cleaned (disinfecting instruments after each use)
- Do not walk barefoot in public places (pool, gym, etc.)
- Nail polish may be applied 24 hours after treatment
- Number of treatments will depend on severity of the Onychomycosis / Toenail Fungus
- The average time interval between treatments is 4-6 weeks
- Due to slow nail growth, results may not be noticeable for 3+ months
- Toenails may take 9-12+ months and fingernails may take 6-9+ months to grow out
- Severely infected nails may take longer
